My name is Julie Brealey. I have always had a great enthusiasm for Sewing and Fashion, and started to create patterns and make my own clothes from the age of 12. I knew that this was something I would want to do for the rest of my life! I went straight to Fashion College from school, excited to discover the new Pattern Cutting and Construction techniques, and achieved a Diploma in Fashion and Textiles. I then worked in the fashion industry, as a Designer / Pattern Cutter, creating garments for a well-known High-Street chain store.
Then, with a young family I worked from home, starting up a small business designing and making Lingerie, and later lycra Dance Wear. I also did some freelance work for the Bristol Old Vic, making costumes for their pantomimes.
Later I turned to teaching. I felt that I wanted to spread the word! I have had so much pleasure from all things sewing-related throughout my life, and I wanted to give something back. I went back to college, gained my Cert. Ed. teaching certificate, and a City and Guilds in Fashion, to refresh my skills. I have been teaching locally, in Bristol Adult Education, for over 20 years, instructing people of all ages (17 to 80+), all genders, and all abilities. I find this very rewarding. It gives me a buzz when I see students producing their first garment, and knowing that their newly-learned skills have changed their lives. They will reap the benefits for years.
